Sharon Hatembo runs Lumuka General Dealers in Lusaka. For the past five years, an NGO has contracted her to rear goats for their programmes. In turn, the NGO supplies the goats to women empowerment groups, enabling the women to earn money to pay for school fees and other household expenses such as food and fertiliser.
“Goat farming is where my heart is,” says Sharon. “Before they go out for the day, I count them. And when they come back again, I count them. Sometimes they get lost, or people steal them.”
Sharon has tapped into KASAKA Loans to buy, among other things, vaccinations to keep her goats healthy, as well as fuel and electricity to run her business.
The speed and convenience of the loans are part of the appeal of KASAKA Loans. “You don’t have to bring your registration papers, and fill out any forms. It happens then and there, you just dial on the phone and within a second you are done,” she says.
But it’s also the service’s reach that helps Sharon run her business. Travelling between the city and rural areas for work, Sharon can access funds to pay suppliers and operate her business even in places with no banks or ATMs. “I can safely say that the loan service has been helpful in my day-to-day business activities, especially when I get stuck in the bush during my business trips,” she says.
